ASPEX VISUAL ARTS TRUST

Aspex Visual Arts Trust appointed Glenn Howells Architects to design a new space for the relocation of the Aspex Gallery to the Vulcan Building on Gun Wharf at the historic Portsmouth Docks.

The relocation of the gallery is seen by Portsmouth City Council as a key ingredient in the regeneration of the docks and it is hoped it will provide a focal point for the new community being built in the area.

The new gallery is a contemporary insertion into the historic fabric and the design reflects this. The existing materials are left exposed where possible with new elements defined by simple, modern materials. The spaces have been organised to maintain the impressive volume of the existing space, to be clearly legible and to create a flexible solution.
