An elegantly crafted and appropriately scaled red brick facade design with intrinsic terracotta detailing defines this new purpose-built student residences in south Birmingham.

The design responds to several local landmarks set around the location, including the brick and faience clad Dogpool Lane Hotel and the richly detailed, red brick Selly Park Church.

By reinstating a piece of underutilised green space as a matured setting for the building, our design integrates this piece of public realm with the entrance experience for students and provides the local community with a space to dwell and enjoy. We have also extended this green open space to visually connect to a private landscaped courtyard through the entrance foyer.

Connecting residents with wider Birmingham through active travel choices, including the cycle network, will create an attractive place for students to live, study and socialise with outdoor space providing a healthy and sustainable environment.

The scheme houses a range of communal and social spaces, including a games area, lounge space, cinema room, gymnasium and group study pods. In addition to these amenity spaces, we have also proposed generous spaces around circulation areas on every level for students to gather and interact in smaller groups.

Dogpool Lane has been a culmination of many experiences and lessons learnt working with our client Alumno Developments. It will provide a much needed sustainable home to embed students in the wider community and act as a catalyst for regenerating the local neighbourhood.
