GHA’s seminal theatre project created the UK’s first purpose-built performance space to train young people in theatre arts as well as a permanent home for the Playbox Theatre Company.
Drawing on the practice’s previous theatre experience, it is made up of a main auditorium for an audience of up to 294 people at the centre of a complex of smaller studios, workshops and ancillary spaces. The ‘village’ element provides a front of house café and break out spaces.
The project helped pioneer sustainable buildings solutions such as the TermoDeck system to reduce ventilation loadings.
